Macbook Screen

Over the Christmas break, Abe’s laptop started doing this:

Not sure what’s causing it but it’s getting this strip of white down the middle. We’re going to the Apple Store Monday to see what’s going on. It’s under warranty so it should be find. I’ll let you know what happens.

Step Lights

Posted on December 2, 2009 | Filed Under Hardware, soundroom

Shawn Wilson has installed lights to the steps entering the soundroom. The pictures below are of an LED set we installed but they were too bright and wouldn’t work with our motion detector or our fader. Now there is a regular set installed and automatically comes on when you enter the room. It also has a light sensor so if the lights are already on in the soundroom, the stair lights don’t come on. We’re eventually going to install the LED set under the counter of the soundboard and install an easy to get to switch so we can see when wiring under the counter. Let me know what you think!

iTunes Keyboard & USB

I’ve installed a new mini keyboard in the soundroom for the iTunes computer. There is also an extra USB cable for jump drives, external hard drives or to charge a cell phone or iPod.

Blue Screen of Death

Posted on November 25, 2009 | Filed Under Computers, Hardware

My PC in my office recently started giving me the Blue Screen of Death. I think I either have a corrupt hard drive or a major hardware error. It’s also recently had a pretty nasty virus and I’ve been trying to transfer all the data off the drives. Now it’s sitting on my floor in my office so I can take out the hard drives and transfer them to the server via a USB adapter. Once I start the project I’ll detail how I do it.

Thrive Marriage Conference

I tried to keep most people out of serving during the Thrive Marriage Conference. One reason is to allow couples to be together and not separated by having one serve in tech. Another is to keep singles from attending the event for obvious reasons. A third is it allows me and my wife to serve together. We began serving together in the sound room, AWANA, VBS and college ministries. Now I’m mostly serving in tech and every now and then she gets to come along and help. Here are some pictures of technology at the event (and a few others too).

New Projector Bulb

Posted on October 14, 2009 | Filed Under Hardware, Visual

A couple weeks ago the projector in the Coffee Cove started turning on and off and a light on the unit came on that said bulb. It seems on some older versions of the bulb the wires feeding the power get brittle and fall off. This is what happened to ours. I think the heat of the bulb is deteriorating the wire and shielding. New bulbs now come with a protective cover shielding the wiring. I ordered two, one for replacement and the other for back up since we have 3 of the same projector, the Dell 2400MP, in the Coffee Cove, Shine worship area, and a mobile unit currently in the Fellowship Hall.

Finished Up The Rest of The Shopping List

Posted on August 13, 2009 | Filed Under Audio, Hardware, Stage

Shawn and I ran around town today to find the rest of the items on my recent shopping list. Here’s what we picked up:

More Velcro: we use this to organize cables
Double sided mounting tape: We’re using this in the youth room to mount a wireless mic under the desk.
9 volt adapters: we’re going to try to replace as many 9 volt batteries that we can, mostly for DI boxes.
1/4″ to RCA adapters: we use these for iPods, CD players, DVD players, etc. to sound boards.
20 foot wireless mic antenna cord: we’re installing a wireless mic in the youthroom. It’s an old one from upstairs so we needed a new cord.

Industrial Strength Velcro

I bought some more stuff today but the thing I’m mostly excited about is the “Industrial Strength Velcro”. It’s a 15 foot strip and 2 inches wide. We’ll use it to “tape” down cords on the stage. This will be an attempt to replace the expensive Pro-Gaff tape. I’ll let you know how it works out. You can get it at Walmart for $20.

I also got a couple black 15 foot extension cords, 2 black power strips & a 1/8″ Y adapter.

New Cables = Cleaner Stage

Posted on August 11, 2009 | Filed Under Hardware, Stage

We recently ordered some new XLR & 1/4″ instrument cables from Sweetwater.com. These cables have a lifetime warranty so of one goes bad, don’t toss it. We can send it back and get repaired for free minus shipping.

Shawn Wilson ordered them specifics lengths so we can get the stage cleaned up and not have long loops of cords on the stage. He’s installing them today.

Mediagate is Back!

Posted on August 11, 2009 | Filed Under Hardware, Visual

The device that runs the announcements on the flat screen in the foyer stopped working a few weeks ago and I sent it in for repair. We’ve been using my wife’s laptop as a temporary replacement along with a free app called Boxee. Well the Mediagate is back and I’ll be getting it back up and running sometime this week. Hopefully it stays up and running until I can get a Mac Mini into the budget someday to replace it.
